Jam Restaurant – Chicago, IL – 2011
Jam, one of the nation’s most celebrated brunch restaurants has relocated to heart of Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood. Helmed by Chef/Owner Jeffrey Mauro, formerly of Charlie Trotter’s and North Pond, Jam is pioneering the concept of the modern diner in design and fare.
I was invited to work with amazingly talented Linsey Burritt and Crystal Grover of The Indo Projects on this make-over of the new location for Jam. Untold hours were spent on a a geometric stencil pattern throughout the restaurant, meticulously lined and painted by hand. The classic diner design motifs of exposed kitchens, communal counters, mirrors, stainless steel, and repetitive geometric patterns are reconceived within a modernist composition. The egalitarian spirit of the traditional diner aligns with a contemporary sensibility engendering Jam with a casual elegance.
It was a pleasure working with Crystal, Linsey, and especially Jerry Suqi (who is one of the most amazing people I’ve ever worked for). Jam was originally only a 3 minute walk from my home, and I loved spending Sunday mornings there, but the new location is amazing, and will hopefully be there for years to come.
